A Busy September for the Steve O'Neil Apartments!

As we settle into the fall season, we’re thrilled to share some incredible milestones and events from the past month at the Steve O'Neil Apartments. Thanks to our hardworking team, dedicated community partners, and your continued support, September was full of progress, fun, and new beginnings.

A big shoutout to our amazing family coaches, Caleb and Rachel, for their hard work in getting all of our kiddos back into the school routine! They helped families prepare for the new year by:

  • Establishing morning routines for getting up and catching the bus.

  • Setting up meetings with school staff to monitor grades and attendance.

  • Creating a rewards system to encourage good bus behavior.

We’re proud to say that every single child received the school supplies and backpacks they needed—and then some! Thanks to the incredible donations we received from the community, we have extra supplies to keep our kids prepared throughout the school year. It took the compassion of supporters like you to make this happen, so thank you!

We kicked off the school year with a bang at our Back-to-School Bingo event at Duluth Cider. A huge thank you to Holly, our youth program coordinator, for organizing this fun-filled evening. The event was a great success, bringing families and the community together to celebrate the new school year in style!

On September 18th, we hosted a Car Seat Clinic for our tenants. Families not only received free car seats that were the appropriate size for their child(ren), but they also learned how to properly install them—ensuring the safety of their little ones. It was an essential and educational event for many of our families.

In partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, we hosted one of their bi-monthly project parties on September 24th. This event was extra special as we celebrated the August and September birthdays of the kids in our community. The highlight? A reptile party that had everyone entertained and in awe!

Thanks to the efforts of our community events coordinator, Nicole, we’ve established a new partnership with Recovery Alliance Duluth (RAD). We’re thrilled to announce that RAD now holds a weekly recovery group in our building every Monday evening—a much-needed resource for many in our community. This is a huge win for us, and we’re grateful to have this support in place.

Last but certainly not least, we’re excited to announce that we’re fully staffed! We recently welcomed two fantastic new team members: Cameron, our new family coach, and Katie, our new Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) teacher. We’re excited to see the impact they’ll have on our community and look forward to the great work ahead!

Chum is “People of faith working together to provide basic necessities, foster stable lives, and organize for a just and compassionate community.” We provide emergency shelter, food and street outreach throughout Duluth.

Chum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit human services agency in Duluth, MN sponsored and governed by an interfaith coalition of 44 faith communities. Chum was founded in 1973 when 10 churches located in Duluth’s Central Hillside neighborhood pooled their resources to meet the needs of the neighborhood’s many low-income residents more effectively. Chum now offers emergency food, shelter, advocacy, support, and outreach throughout Duluth.

Chum is Duluth’s primary safety-net organization where people who are homeless or who have very low incomes can come for assistance and a welcoming, safe community. Chum operates Duluth’s largest food shelf and provides emergency shelter and supportive services for homeless individuals and families. We help people find housing and employment, access public benefits, and receive basic medical care. At Chum’s Drop-In Center (day shelter) people can pick up mail (both physical and e-mail), do their laundry, have a hot meal, socialize over games or conversations, and perhaps most importantly, find a warm and welcoming community where they can be safe, heard, and respected.
Chum is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
