October at the Steve O'Neil Apartments

Festive Door Decorating Contest

To kick off the month, we held a door decorating contest for both tenants and staff. Creativity was in full swing, and everyone got into the spirit! One of our tenants took home the winning title for their door, while our Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program staff won the top spot among employees.

Pancake Breakfast & Halloween Costume Giveaway

We hosted a pancake breakfast, thanks to the help of Pat Benson, where tenants enjoyed a warm breakfast and picked out Halloween costumes for their kids. The event drew 43 tenants and their children, and the excitement was contagious as kids found costumes that made their Halloween extra special.

Dental Care Partnership

Through a partnership with Anne Romberg, our shelter Health and Wellness

Coordinator, we hosted dental sign-up days to help tenants access dental appointments covered by a grant. Our first session was such a hit that Anne will now be visiting weekly in November, helping even more tenants secure free dental care!

New Parenting Class through ECFE

Courtney, our lead ECFE teacher, has become certified to lead the Circles of Security class. She’s teamed up with another ECFE teacher from ISD709 to offer an 8-week parenting course, free for tenants. This program is a great resource for parents wanting to strengthen family connections and build supportive parenting skills.

Pumpkin Carving Fun

For one of her programming days, Holly, our Youth Program Coordinator, led a pumpkin carving session for the kids. The kids loved creating their spooky masterpieces, showing great care with their tools as they worked on their pumpkins!

Halloween Trick-or-Treat & Pizza Party

Halloween night was filled with spooky delight as kids trick-or-treated down our staff hallways. Thanks to Nicole, our community engagement coordinator, the halls were decorated with festive, spooky décor. Kids and staff enjoyed free pizza and soda donated by a community member who also helps our tenants with tax filing each year. Staff and tenants dressed up in costume, and the kids left with full stomachs and smiles.

Welcoming Adrienne, Our New Family Shelter Advocate

We’re thrilled to welcome Adrienne, our new Family Shelter Advocate, to the Stabilization Services team. She has jumped right in, filling every unit in the family shelter and working tirelessly to help each family find permanent housing. Her dedication is already making a big impact!

October at Steve O'Neil Apartments was all about building community and supporting our tenants. We can’t wait to see what the coming months bring!

Chum is “People of faith working together to provide basic necessities, foster stable lives, and organize for a just and compassionate community.” We provide emergency shelter, food and street outreach throughout Duluth.

Chum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit human services agency in Duluth, MN sponsored and governed by an interfaith coalition of 44 faith communities. Chum was founded in 1973 when 10 churches located in Duluth’s Central Hillside neighborhood pooled their resources to meet the needs of the neighborhood’s many low-income residents more effectively. Chum now offers emergency food, shelter, advocacy, support, and outreach throughout Duluth.

Chum is Duluth’s primary safety-net organization where people who are homeless or who have very low incomes can come for assistance and a welcoming, safe community. Chum operates Duluth’s largest food shelf and provides emergency shelter and supportive services for homeless individuals and families. We help people find housing and employment, access public benefits, and receive basic medical care. At Chum’s Drop-In Center (day shelter) people can pick up mail (both physical and e-mail), do their laundry, have a hot meal, socialize over games or conversations, and perhaps most importantly, find a warm and welcoming community where they can be safe, heard, and respected.
Chum is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
